Reason #4. Gratitude reigns my life

Disclaimer: I have had a very privileged life since, well, forever. So it comes as no surprise that being grateful and having gratitude being the compass of my life comes easy to me.

I was born into a very loving household. My childhood was filled with love, connection, laughter and colour. There was always food on the table, all nutritious, balanced and sprinkled with the love contained by the hands that made them. We received the best education that was available to us, in and outside of the classroom. Whilst money wasn’t flowing endlessly all the time, there was never a sense of lack, there was always a sense of abundance; and when we had the opportunity to go and see the world, they made what was necessary to make it happen to us, so we could learn how to grow wings.

There have been many gifts given to us by our parents, but I have to say that the best one, for me, is that I was always allowed to be myself, quirks and all. There were no arbitrary rules but lots of guidance; there was no dictating who we were to become but trust that by walking alongside us, leading by example and teaching us the values that became the core of our moral compass, we would become the best reflection of our soul with the mortal instruments to thrive.

Mom and dad are light people, they are kind, honest and beautiful souls. They are the most generous people I know. They give, help and support the people they love in tangible and intangible ways. They don’t do it for the recognition, they do it from an ingrained sense of gratitude. Gratitude for all that life has given them and the willingness to allow others to experience, one way or another, some of the light that has been shined upon them.

When you grow up in such an environment, being grateful comes as second nature, as easy as taking a deep breath of fresh air. Gratitude reigns my life because of the parents I have and the light they have shone upon me through my 35 years of existence.

If you will continue to follow the 35 reasons why I love myself, you will probably hear me talk a lot about my family, they are after all, the biggest part of what makes me the person I am and why I love myself — loving myself is loving them…
